Milton Keynes Health & Safety Group (MKHSG)

Welcome to the Milton Keynes Health and Safety Group website.

Our Objectives

We are a group of safety advisors and employers' representatives promoting mutual help and guidance in all matters of Health and Safety at Work in Milton Keynes and the surrounding areas.

Affiliation

The MKHSG is an independent group affiliated to the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA), and a member of the National Health & Safety Groups Council.

History

The group was first formed in 1975 from a nucleus of Safety Officers attending the Milton Keynes Development Corporation (MKDC) Contractors Safety Group with interests additional to those of construction safety. Initially it also incorporated members of the local Fire Prevention Liaison Panel - long since disbanded.

The impetus for safety advice and assistance for companies arose from the introduction of the Health and Safety at Work Act in 1974. Many local representatives welcomed the introduction of the new group and it was strongly supported in its early years by the MKDC Safety Officer and support staff.

The majority of the club funds arose from a joint Fire and Safety exhibition in Middleton Hall ( Central Milton Keynes ) in 1978. In those early days before the advent of PCs, CD-ROM and the Internet the group played an important part in local liaison and provision of information for Safety Officers with advice readily available from a member 'expert' from the group. It was also customary then to borrow and/or loan more specialist items of equipment ( eg. Draeger tubes, sound level meters, safety films etc) not generally in widespread use in many companies. This custom continues to this day but with a different range of items including computer-training packages, training videos, etc.

Membership of the group is open to all industrial and commercial firms, the self employed and to other interested bodies and persons within Milton Keynes and the surrounding areas.
